Dr. Zewdineh B. Haile
Dr. Zewdineh Beyene Haile is a co-founder and managing director of EMAHIZEE Global Consulting (PLC) and a legal counsel to the US-Ethiopia Investment Group (PLC) and Advent International, PLC. He is also a president of the African Institute for Arbitration, Mediation, Conciliation and Research
(AIAMCR), a non profit organization based in California, USA.
Dr. Haile is a consultant and a lawyer trained in both common law and continental legal systems. He holds two doctorate degrees in law and a number of other graduate degrees earned from African, European and American Universities. He is an accomplished researcher, trainer, and a certified mediator with extensive experience in the field of diplomacy. Prior to joining the University of California at Berkeley in Summer 2002, he served on the Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs for seven years in different capacities: head of the human rights and humanitarian affairs division; head of the directorate for the United Nations specialized agencies, intergovernmental organizations and international non-governmental organizations; head of neighboring and Nile basin countries directorate. During his term in the Foreign Service, he has represented Ethiopia in many international meetings, including the United Nations (UN), African Union (AU) and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development [for seven Northeastern African countries](IGAD). He was also member of the Ethiopian negotiating team to the Eritrea- Ethiopia peace process. He was also involved in the Southern Sudan and Somali peace processes spearheaded by IGAD. He has a teaching experience, including Moscow State Academy of Law and the Ethiopian Civil Service College.
Over the years he has served as a long and short-term consultant to international organizations, including UNDP, UNFPA, USAID, UK DFID, GTZ and IGAD. Dr Haile’s scholarship covers many aspects of international law and organizations, with the corpus of work focusing on public and private international dispute resolution, the United Nations, human rights and humanitarian laws, the law of economic integration, international environmental law and general theory of international law. His academic interest also included international relations and foreign policy, economic integration, international trade, peace and security studies. He closely follows various peace processes currently undergoing in Africa, the functioning of the African Union, IGAD and the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD).
Dr Zewdineh Beyene Haile played an integral and foundational role in the successful completion of national needs assessments and five-year strategic plan development for the Ethiopian Institution of the Ombudsman and the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission in 2006.
